Mac users tend to smile when they hear about Windows' security issues. Whatever the reasons might be, OS X has proved to be a very secure computing platform, with a lack of viruses, and critical exploits usually getting shut down by Apple before any damage is done. Physical access, however, is another thing. If your computer isn't locked down tight, anyone sitting at your Mac can do exactly what they like, from stealing your data to a scary rm -r in the command line.

The built in Keychain helps, but entering a password can be a chore for some. Enter the Eikon from Upek. The USB fingerprint scanner now works with Macs, although the driver software is still in beta:

UPEK Eikon is a swipe fingerprint reader with capacitive sensor and USB 2.0 connection. The scanner is no longer manufactured. Support modules for this scanner are included in MegaMatcher 10.0 SDK, MegaMatcher On Card 10.0 SDK, VeriFinger 10.0 SDK and Free Fingerprint Verification SDK.

Under some circumstances the application can crash if multiple processes try to acquire the fingerprint sensor.

The Upek lets you use a quick finger-swipe to unlock the screensaver, access website passwords and allow admin level operations. In short, anything which pulls a password from the OS X Keychain.

I grabbed a copy of the software to test it out, but it comes in a user-unfriendly installation package when it should really sit in the System Preferences, and – ridiculous to Mac users – requires a restart to install. I am not sure if you found a resolution as yet. I had the same issue and was able to resolve it.

Windows 10 removed the AuthenTec software for the Eikon mini finderprint reader. Windows compatibility checker removed the software automatically, but did it in a very orderly fashion. The AuthenTec Eikon Mini driver still appeared under Biometric devices.

The way to resolve it is not to use the AuthenTec software as AuthenTec have not released updated software to my knowledge. Instead use Windows Windows Settings to add fingerprints on the Eikon Mini. To do this do the following:

1. Go to Windows Settings

2. Select Accounts

3. Select Sign-in Options

4. Select Set up under the Fingerprint heading

8. Select Add Another Finger if you want to add more fingerprints
