If you’ve ever received an email message from a Windows sufferer than you’ve likely received a winmail.dat file. Thank you, Microsoft, for making email even worse than it already is.
Winmail.dat files are TNEF’s. Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format attachment files which allow Microsoft Outlook users to receive email messages which retain the original formatting. Those files are much hated among the Mac community but there’s a way out.
For Better Or For Worse
The winmail.dat problem is so prevalent that there’s WinMail.Dat website which will extract those attachments for free. The Mac App Store has an app that does the deed, too. It’s called WinMail DAT Viewer Pro; inexpensive and it works.
Or, if you’re an owner of a new Apple Watch Edition model, the one that can skew upwards of $17,000, then you’ll prefer to use Letter Opener Pro to take care of those nasty winmail.dat attachment files.
Why? Because you have money to burn and enjoy it.
What Letter Opener Pro does is what the manual method does, but automatically, in the background so you never know it’s around, and you never get those nasty winmail.dat attachment files to worry about.
There’s a price to pay for automatic, of course, but if you deal with many winmail.dat files then Letter Opener Pro is a worthy choice. There’s also a free Lite version with in-app upgrade options– perfect to try it out to see if it works for you.
This is one of those handy utilities that is worth the price tag if you have the winmail.dat problem regularly. Install it and it just works. That’s why the reviews are good, because Mac users appreciate anything that helps them overcome a Windows and Office design flaw.

About Winmail Files
Winmail.dat files are attachments sent by Microsoft mail applications (Outlook, Outlook Express or Exchange) on a proprietary format called RTF (Rich Text Format). Being a non-standard attachment format, users from other e-mail clients (like Thunderbird or Lotus Notes) or platforms (like Android, Apple, iPad or iPhone) cannot natively read them. An e-mail containing an winmail.dat attachment looks like an empty e-mail with only one attachment. The original e-mail information like subject, body and attachments is packed into a single winmail.dat file, which in some cases also receives a generic name like information01.dat. And these attachments are sometimes called T.N.E.F. (Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format) files, which is the technical term for the format Outlook uses. Learn more...

E-reader For Mac
At $1.19, this is absolute steal. The missing drag and drop is not such a huge deal, as most of DAT files I receive have few attachments and I usually need just one or two anyway.
